Acting emperor Dilip Kumar's successful musical suspense film 'Madhumati' enthralled the common people with the beauty of Uttarakhand. It was shot in 1958 in Bhowali and Ghorakhal near Nainital. After this many big films were shot in this area.

Dilip Kumar played the dual role of Devendra and Anand in Madhumati. The thrilling story of reincarnation, the direction of Vimal Roy and the unforgettable music of music composer Salil Choudhary combined with the magic of Dilip Kumar's performance enthralled the audience.

Vyjayanthimala played three roles of Madhumati, Madhavi and Radha. Pran played the role of King Ugra. The shooting went on here for six weeks. Seeing the panoramic view of Uttarakhand, people used to get desperate to come here.

Due to dense fog, shooting had to be done again in Mumbai.

During the shooting of Madhumati, there was a lot of fog here due to which its print looked blurry. After seeing this during editing, 80 percent of the shooting was done again by making a set of the film in Aarey Milk Colony, Mumbai. Dilip Kumar helped Bimal Roy, who was already facing a financial crisis and got it done by other people as well.

Many records are associated with Madhumati. It was the first Indian film to be screened abroad and was also the Indian entry for the Oscars that year. The film won a total of nine Filmfare Awards including Best Film, Direction, Music, Singer (Lata Mangeshkar) which was a record till 1994.

 

The film was screened at the 1958 International Film Festival in Prague as well as in India and was the first film to be screened abroad. Bimal Roy's daughter Rinki Bhattacharya had also urged former Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat to make a memorial to the bungalow near Bhowali in which Madhumati was shot.
