Supreme Court may hear this week on the petition against the appointment of Rakesh Asthana

The Supreme Court is likely to hear on August 5 the petition against the appointment of IPS officer Rakesh Asthana as Delhi Police Commissioner. According to the list of the Supreme Court, the bench of Chief Justice (CJI) NV Ramana and Justice Suryakant will hear the petition. Significantly, the appointment of Rakesh Asthana as Delhi Police Commissioner has been challenged in the apex court. Advocate ML Sharma has filed a petition in this regard, seeking cancellation of Asthana's appointment. Advocate ML Sharma has demanded contempt proceedings against PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah and officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs in this case.

It has been said in the petition that appointing Asthana as Delhi Police Commissioner four days before his retirement is against the decision of the Supreme Court. Politics has also heated up in the matter of Asthana being appointed as the Commissioner of Police of Delhi a few days before retirement. Last week, on Thursday, a resolution was passed against the appointment of Asthana as Delhi Police Commissioner in the Delhi Assembly.
