International airport to be built in Haridwar, targeted to be ready by 2030- Satpal Maharaj
An international airport will be coming up in Haridwar soon. This move will make the travel lot easier for the pilgrims coming to Uttarakhand from India and abroad.
The Uttarakhand government has started the exercise to build an international airport at Haridwar. State Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj on Monday ordered Haridwar District Magistrate C Ravi Shankar to find land for the airport.
The proposal to construct an airport will be forwarded to the aviation department after zeroing in on the land. The committee set up by Maharaj will find out the land space to develop a five-and-a-half-kilometre-wide airstrip for the international airport.
Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, who visited Haridwar on Monday, said that Haridwar is the city of religion and saints. A large number of devotees come here from all over the country and abroad. Just next to it are the yoga city Rishikesh and the capital Dehradun.
A large number of devotees and tourists come to Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun from abroad, so by building an international airport in Haridwar, the chances of devotees and tourists coming here will increase manifold. This will boost tourism in the state and new employment opportunities will be created.
Maharaj said that the District Magistrate has formed a joint team of Aviation, Revenue and other departments. The team will select about 1000 acres of land for the airport. The target is to have this airport ready by 2030. This will also give a boost to Chardham Yatra.
The initiative to build an international airport in Haridwar was started a decade ago as well. Then the committee had talked about the availability of land between Roorkee and Haridwar, but now the search for land will start afresh.
