French Open: Roger Federer reaches third round, may clash with Djokovic in quarterfinals

Former world number-1 player Roger Federer of Switzerland has made it to the third round of the French Open on Thursday. The 39-year-old Federer defeated Croatia's Marin Cilic 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 in the second round. World number-1 player Novak Djokovic has also reached the third round. Federer and Djokovic can be seen in the quarter-finals.


Federer will next face Dominic Koepfer. The German defeated 30th seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to make it to the third round. Djokovic defeated Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round. Djokovic won the match in two hours and nine minutes.


In other matches, ninth-seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini defeated Argentina's Federico Correa 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in less than two hours to reach the third round. Berrettini will face Korean player Kwun Soon-woo, who defeated Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.


Stephens also advanced to the next round

In another match, Argentina's 10th seed David Schwartzman defeated Slovenia's Aljaz Bedine 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round, while 14th seed Gael Monfils defeated Sweden's Mikel Yammer in the second round. Lost 0-6, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6.


Former US Open champion and 2018 French Open runner-up Sloane Stephens defeated a top 10 player for the first time in two-and-a-half years to secure a place in the third round. She beat 10th ranked Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-1 with 22 winners.


Last year's runner-up, Sofia Kenin, won 7-5, 6-3 over Haley Baptiste in a match between two American players. Fifth seed Elina Svitolina also made it to the next round. Svitolina defeated French Open debutant Ann Li 6-0, 6-4.
