The Covid-19 vaccines in the country, Covishield and Covaxin, are expected to hit the market soon. The vaccine makers are keen to start selling the vaccines in retail pharmacies once they get full marketing approval. Official sources said that these vaccines may soon get approval from the drug regulator for sale in the regular market. These can be priced at Rs 275 per dose and with an additional service charge of Rs 150. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has been directed to work towards making vaccines available at affordable rates.

So far, the cost of Covaxin in private hospitals is fixed at Rs 1,200 per dose and Covishield at Rs 780 per dose. These prices include a service charge of Rs 150. Both these vaccines are authorized for emergency use only in the country.

The Subject Expert Committee on COVID-19 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, on January 19, recommended the approval of Covishield and Covaxin to be marketed regularly for adults with certain conditions.

An official source said that the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has been asked to work towards making it available at an affordable rate. The price of the vaccine is likely to be limited to Rs 275 per dose plus an additional service charge of Rs 150.

Serum Institute of India Director (Government and Regulatory Affairs) Prakash Kumar Singh had on October 25 submitted an application to the Drugs Controller General of India seeking approval to launch the Kovidshield vaccine in the regular market.
