Even before the 2022 assembly elections, Congress has made up its mind for a face-off with Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat. The eyes of the party are fixed on the by-election of the Chief Minister. Whether the CM would contest the assembly by-election from the vacant seat of Gangotri or any other seat, the main opposition party has made a strategy to surround him.
Congress has been vocal since the change of leadership in the BJP government in the state. Just before the assembly elections, the main opposition party wants to send a message that it is ready for a fierce contest. This is the Congress threw full force in the by-election of the Salt Assembly seat after Tirath Singh Rawat became the Chief Minister. The election took place just a few months before the next year's election. In this election campaign, from former Chief Minister Harish Rawat, state in-charge Devendra Yadav to all the veterans of the state congress jumped. It is a different matter that the margin of defeat of the Congress in this by-election has become more than the last election.
In fact, in the last assembly elections, Congress had to face a severe defeat. For the first time in the elections so far, Congress had to be reduced to just 11 seats. Now after the death of Leader of Opposition Indira Hridayesh, the number of members in the Congress Legislative Assembly has now reduced to 10. Uneasy with the thumping majority given to the BJP, Congress is now taking all the by-elections very seriously before the upcoming assembly elections. The party is taking it as a rehearsal for the main election battle. Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat is presently a Member of Parliament. He has to contest by-elections to reach the assembly. In such a situation, the ruling party is looking for an assembly seat for him.
At present, there is a churning going on for the Chief Minister's election from the Gangotri assembly seat, which fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Gopal Singh Rawat. In view of this, Congress has also started preparing for retaliation. However, Congress will also open its cards only after the picture is clear about the by-elections from the BJP and the Chief Minister. Former MLA Vijaypal Sajwan is almost certain to contest the election from the Congress from the Gangotri seat. In the event of Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat contesting from this seat, Congress is going to leave no stone unturned to make this battle interesting. Along with the Congress, former MLA Vijaypal Sajwan is also waiting for a clear stand on the BJP candidate in the by-election.
